3 Reasons Why We Bought a Cat Tree

By Glee

Early this January, we purchased a cat tree. We initially planned to buy a tree for our cat next month because we´re saving for a really big one, something tall with several branches. It´s quite expensive and very much out of budget. But then our pet couldn´t wait anymore, we had to buy him a tree right away!

How quickly time flies. It´s been two months since my husband rescued our cat from the streets. That means, Orange is about six or seven months old now. He´s no longer a baby, and he needs more stuff.

After we´ve completed all the medications and after a couple of visits to the vet, our cat is now free of bronchitis and he´s quite active. (Read My Cat´s First Visit to the Vet) He runs around and learns to bump on the walls. He becomes very inquisitive and adventurous.

So why did we feel compel to buy him a cat tree even if we haven´t saved enough for it yet? Here are the reasons.

1. Our cat tears the kitchen wallpaper

Because Orange is an indoor cat, we gave him a space in the kitchen as his playground, we put a carpet where he could lie down and play. When he was young, we didn´t have problem. He simply would go there and play with his toys when he´s on the mood. But as he turns into teenager, the way he plays becomes more robust, running around the floor with his mice toy and jumping on the walls, tearing out wallpaper away. Once a piece is torn off, he would enjoy peeling off the edges of where it´s torn.

I was initially upset when he started tearing the wallpaper however, I realized I should be thankful he only does it in the kitchen, he does not destruct anything in our living room or bedroom. We know that our cat now needs something which he can climb on.

2. He claimed ownership of my swivel chair which I use for work

My cat happily explores his tree.

Because we were still unable to get Orange a cat tree, he started kicking me out of my swivel chair. He climbed on my chair, sat there to relax, and even slept on.

He used to sleep on the sofa and before there was no problem. But then suddenly, for whatever reasons he discovered he loved my chair, he started using it often.

If I´m blogging and sitting in my chair, and then Orange wants to use the chair, he would stand on the side and scratch me from the side with his claws, followed with his weird meow sound. If I ignore him, he moves to the other side and does the same thing. If still I don´t give in to his demands, he would jump on the back of the chair, hang on there and scratch. If he´s really naughty, he crawl under my table, jump on my knees and hang there with his claws.

Many times I give way, give him the chair and I sit on a stool instead, then my spoiled Orange would sleep on swivel chair soundly, much to my husbands objection. More and more I saw the need to buy him a cat tree.

3. He loves to sleep on a covered hole

One night while playing with Orange on the sofa, I discovered that he also loves to sleep in a covered hole. I was covering myself with blanket because it was cold and my cat was curious on the movement of my hands and feet under the sheet. He jumped on it and played wrestling, as he always does. After a while of playing wrestling with him using my hand under tha blanket, I throw the entire blanket on him. I thought he would be scared, but to my surprise, he didn´t struggle, stayed still, and slept.

So what I did I made a little hideout for him using pillows and blankets on the sofa, and that night, he slept so well in it. We figure, we better opt for a cat tree with covered sleeping area.

4. To give him a cat tree as a New Year´s gift

Orange loves his new bed in this new cat tree.

Other than the lots of snacks and addition toys as Christmas gifts, we didn´t have a new year´s gift for Orange. So we thought, we probably better get him a cat tower now. Not only does he needs it, we can also give it to him as a gift. So we went and shopped for a cat tree in 2nd January but instead of the original cat tower we´ve been eyeing for, a really tall one with lots of playful features and which costs 350 euro, we went for a simpler one as you can see in the picture above. It´s worth 115 euro.

Although this tower doesn´t have branches, it has a covered sleeping area on top which is perfect for our cat´s desires. Orange is definitely pleased with it.

What do you think of Orange´s cat tree?
